Join us for Behind the Scenes, an evening that brings you an in-depth look at rarely seen areas of Michael Garron Hospital. This is your special opportunity to:

  • Tour our Cardiac Catheterization Lab with Dr. Mohammad Zia, Chief of Cardiology and Medical Director of Cardiac Services. You'll see where our specialists save lives by opening blocked blood vessels in the heart – preventing heart attacks and other cardiac events.
  • Explore our da Vinci surgical robot with Dr. Rajiv Singal, Chief of Surgery and Co-Director of Surgery Health Service. You'll learn how surgeons use robotic-assisted surgery to help patients recover faster.

Dr. Rajiv Singal
Dr. Rajiv Singal

Dr. Rajiv Singal received his medical degree in 1990 from the University of Toronto. He did his postgraduate surgical training in Toronto, obtaining his board certification in Urology with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in 1995.

Dr. Singal joined the surgical staff at Michael Garron Hospital in 1996 and currently serves as the Chief of Surgery. In 2012, he founded the Surgical Robotics Program, which he continues to lead.

Dr. Singal is an Associate Professor in the Department of Surgery at the University of Toronto. He supervises the Clinical Endourology Fellowship program at Michael Garron Hospital under the umbrella of the University of Toronto and also teaches undergraduate and postgraduate medical trainees. He works on Cancer Care Ontario initiatives related to prostate cancer care.

Clinical areas of interest include the surgical management of kidney stones, kidney, bladder and prostate cancer, as well as robotic surgery and prostate disease.

Dr. Mohammad Zia
Dr. Mohammad Zia

Dr. Mo Zia is an Interventional Cardiologist and the Chief of Cardiology at Michael Garron Hospital. Dr. Zia specializes in all diseases of the heart, but has a particular interest in coronary artery disease, interventional cardiology and cardiac imaging.

He completed a Cardiology and Internal Medicine Residency at the University of Toronto, and went on to do an Interventional Cardiology Fellowship at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre. Subsequently, he did an Advanced Cardiac Imaging Fellowship (Level 3 training) in both Cardiac MRI and CT at Columbia University in New York. He is also certified in Nuclear Cardiology and Echocardiography.

Dr. Zia is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of Toronto and an Affiliate Scientist at the Sunnybrook Research Institute. His primary research interest is delineating myocardial tissue injury using cardiac MRI post-acute myocardial infarction.
