Local businesses share their love for the heart of the east

Heartfelt gratitude as local businesses hold fundraisers for Michael Garron Hospital

Throughout February, 17 East Toronto businesses and their customers raised funds to support great healthcare inspired by community.

From fun craft workshops and movie nights to sales of delicious foods and beverages, many of the fundraising events had Valentine themes. Each was inspired by a desire to show gratitude to Michael Garron Hospital and to give back to the East Toronto community.

“We feel a lot of gratitude to Michael Garron Hospital for its leadership during COVID,” says Daryl Aitken, owner of Fabric Spark. “We were very happy for the chance to participate, and our customers were too.” Fabric Spark donated proceeds from two “sit and sew” workshops and sales of embroidered felt heart kits.

“Supporting the communities we operate in is an important part of Rorschach’s mission, so we are excited to be able to donate to Michael Garron Hospital and support the care they offer to our neighbours and community,” says Nolan Maguire, Operations Manager at Rorschach Brewing Co., which raised money through pizza sales and customer donations.

“We are in a beautiful and caring community that supports each other in so many different ways. We feel extremely fortunate to have our business here. It’s important to give back and support initiatives that will positively impact the entire community,” says Mary Oliveira, owner of Mary’s Brigadeiro Handcrafted Chocolate. She donated proceeds from sales of chocolate boxes.

Participating businesses have raised nearly $5,000 (and counting) to support Michael Garron Hospital’s life-changing and life-saving work. Their contributions help fund:

  • The purchase of modern equipment
  • Redevelopment as work to transform our hospital campus continues
  • Community-based research to develop solutions that make healthcare safer and more effective for everyone
  • Training and education for staff
  • Programs and services focused on addressing the unique healthcare needs of our diverse community

“As the heart of the east, we know there’s a lot of love out there for Michael Garron Hospital. It’s exciting to have so many local businesses step up to support us and we’re grateful to everyone who participated,” says Shannon Moon, Vice-President, Annual Programs, Events & Operations at Michael Garron Hospital Foundation.
