Moez and Marissa Kassam give a big boost to Michael Garron Hospital

Our hospital is receiving a significant boost to its equipment and services thanks to a $3.5 million investment from the Moez & Marissa Kassam Equity Fund.

This generous contribution reflects the Kassam family’s commitment to creating equitable access to healthcare and supporting the diverse communities of East Toronto.

“As a family with deep roots in this community, we understand the importance of accessible, high-quality healthcare,” says Moez Kassam, co-founder and Director of the Moez & Marissa Kassam Equity Fund. “We’re proud to support Michael Garron Hospital in their mission to provide exceptional care to everyone who walks through their doors.”

This investment will establish a Vital Equipment Fund, ensuring our hospital teams have the tools and technology they need to be at their best for patients.

Enhancing heart care

The fund has already enabled the acquisition of cutting-edge equipment, including a high-definition intravascular ultrasound for the cardiology team, making us one of the first hospitals in Canada to utilize this advanced technology.

“This investment is a game-changer,” says Dr. Mohammad Zia, Medical Director of Cardiac Program Expansion at Michael Garron Hospital. “The Kassams’ support allows us to provide truly advanced care, ensuring a healthier future for people in East Toronto and its surrounding areas.”

This ultrasound technology is especially needed in our community, where there are higher rates of chronic diseases, such as heart disease, compared to the general population.

During a high-definition intravascular ultrasound procedure, our Cardiac Catheterization Lab team uses a tiny tube (catheter) to access and evaluate blood vessel tissue. The catheter has an ultrasound probe at the tip that allows doctors to view the heart’s arteries from the inside. This helps them assess blockages, plaque build-up and other fine details.

Intravascular ultrasound is especially valuable for enabling more precise treatments like stent placements to open blocked arteries.

Ongoing impact

The Kassams’ Vital Equipment Fund has also supported the purchase of a new ultrasound machine and additional instruments for the Department of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery. And plans are in place to further equip departments throughout the hospital.

“We are incredibly grateful to the Kassams for their generous investment in our hospital and our community,” says Melanie Kohn, President and CEO of Michael Garron Hospital. “This support will help us continue to provide exceptional care, embed advancements in healthcare and meet the growing needs of our patient population.”

In addition to providing much-needed equipment, the Kassams have also supported our hospital’s historic redevelopment, which culminated in the opening of the Ken and Marilyn Thomson Patient Care Centre last year. In recognition of their support, the Moez & Marissa Kassam Food Court provides an inviting space for patients and families to gather.

Driving progress

“The Moez & Marissa Kassam Equity Fund’s contribution to Michael Garron Hospital is a powerful example of how focused philanthropy can drive advancements in healthcare, leading to better outcomes and a more equitable society,” says Mitze Mourinho, President of Michael Garron Hospital Foundation.

“Their investment represents a new wave of philanthropy, one that is data-driven, results-oriented and focused on creating lasting change.”
