Initially, chemotherapy was identified as the best course of treatment. Anita and her family hurried to schedule and diarize all her appointments. But they worried about the physical toll chemo would take on their loved one.
On reevaluating Anita’s test results, her oncologist later suggested surgery as an option.
“We all felt strongly that surgery would be the best course of action,” recalls Anita’s son*. “She was nervous, but the operation went really well. Anita felt cared for the whole way through.”
Anita stayed at our hospital for four days as she recovered. Her family remained by her side. They took turns spending the night in a small bed alongside Anita’s.
“The nurses were friendly and took time to check in and see that she was okay,” her daughter* said. “We’re so thankful to the hospital and Anita’s care team for getting us to where we are today.”
An expression of gratitude
In appreciation for the care they received, the Tsang family made a generous gift supporting the purchase of a new MRI machine.
Our hospital’s two MRIs are in use almost constantly, around the clock on weekdays and eight hours a day on weekends. Thanks to donors, like the Tsangs, a newer faster model will help us see more patients and reduce long wait times, which can contribute to delayed diagnoses and treatment.
Following discussions with her care team, Anita decided to pursue chemo to reduce the likelihood of the cancer returning.
In the meantime, her family planned a wonderful surprise to be revealed after her last chemo appointment. A plaque was installed outside a sunny patient room at our hospital, commemorating her journey while serving as a beacon of hope for others.
Following her treatment, Anita visited our hospital with her husband, children, and grandchildren.
“We wanted our grandchildren to be with us when she saw it for the first time, so they will all know that our family is part of this hospital and understand how important it is for us to give back,” says Anita’s husband*.
They saw the plaque together and reflected on Anita’s journey with us.
"I would like to thank Dr. Gazala and the nurses that took care of me while I was at the hospital,” says Anita. “I was so surprised to see this sign in my honour. I am happy that our family could contribute to helping the hospital give good care to others.”
