Where a hospital “lives” matters. Michael Garron Hospital sits at the heart of our vibrant and diverse East Toronto neighbourhood.

An interesting way to define a neighbourhood is to consider all the things you might typically find “just around the corner.”

Perhaps a coffee shop, a grocery store, a few schools, restaurants, or parks.

For members of our community and their loved ones – our hospital is close to home, too.

Michael Garron Hospital – the Heart of the East – is “a world of healthcare just around the corner” for hundreds of thousands of people.

This hospital has long been an integral part of our East Toronto community – since 1929.

Today, we’re not only a place where more than 3,500 hospital staff, physicians, and midwives provide expert care from birth to end-of-life daily. For years, kids have gone to school across our street. When sun and fresh air is needed, people enjoy lunch on our park benches.

We are your neighbours.

In this, the most challenging of times, we have also become the frontline of the COVID-19 response “just around the corner.” Since the beginning of the pandemic we’ve diagnosed more than 14,000 COVID-19 cases, provided COVID-19 testing in schools, prioritized support for senior citizens in long-term care homes, and have administered 100,000 vaccines – and counting.

Whether you’re coming in for emergency care, diagnostic imaging, or dialysis treatment, we are here to help you in your time of need.

You can count on us – just as you would a trusted and good neighbour.

Right now, we’re asking you to be a good neighbour, too.

We’re transforming our aging campus and ensuring our facilities support excellent and equitable healthcare for all. The healthcare we all deserve.

Key features of the hospital’s new Ken and Marilyn Thomson Patient Care Centre will include:

  • replacing 215 of the existing hospital beds. Eighty percent of the new patient rooms will be single occupancy so patients can heal in privacy and with dignity;
  • a new chronic disease unit that will bring together the hospital’s current chest, kidney and cardiac centres into one purpose-built space so that patients with multiple diseases will receive coordinated care; and
  • new mental health facilities, including a 44-bed adult mental health inpatient unit and a six-bed inpatient unit for children and youth experiencing acute mental health crises.

Michael Garron Hospital and Foundation are raising $125 million to support this transformation which will see us open our new facility in fall 2022.

It’s an effort that will take all of us, and we’re counting on the generosity of the community to help us reach our goal.

A revitalized Michael Garron Hospital is coming – join your neighbours in building a new and brighter Heart of the East!

Together, let’s build a stronger, healthier East Toronto.
